Future: Upcoming movies

Another movie from down under that looks great. The Babadook is a horror/thriller about a recent widow and her son that battles with a fear of monsters. The trailer looks great but may reveal a bit to much, still looking forward to it.

During an astronomical anomaly a group of friends starts experiencing a troubling chain of reality bending events. This looks like one of those movies with the sci fi as a background and more of a focus on the story itself. Has gotten some good reviews.

Review: A Somewhat Gentle Man

IMDB: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1386683/
Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7VYv3aKJY70

My friend and I saw this on netflix the other day and we didnt quite know what to expect. What we got was a quirky dark comedy from Norway about a man that just got out of jail. The characters are weird in a good way. I especially liked the old horny landlady. The humour is often very subtle but hilarious. Stellan does a good job with his interpretation of the character. If you are scandinavian I'm dead certain you will enjoy the movie but from the outside some of the jokes could run past you.

Review: Under The Skin

IMDB: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1441395/
Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NoSWbyvdhHw

Wow, it's been a while since I have actually enjoyed watching a more "art" movie. Scarlet Johanson does a wonderful job with her acting (and im not just saying that because there is nudity) in this sci-fi. She plays an alien luring easy men to drain their flesh. Scarlet plays her character to almost perfection with an emotionless alien trying to fake emotions. The cinematography is simple yet elegant which together makes it excellent. The soundtrack is more ambient background noise which sets the mood for the scenes. This is not a movie for everyone. If you are not an avid movie lover and just watch a few now and then I suggest stay clear. If you are then you probably already heard about it and should go see it.

Review: Noah

IMDB: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1959490/
Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6qmj5mhDwJQ

I went into this movie without watching a trailer expecting to see a heavy religious adaption of the story of Noah and the arc from the Bible. After the first 5 minutes my expectations got shattered and what was shown to me was a fantasy story about a man getting visions from "the creator" in a desolate world. Russel Crowe does his usual though guy act and it's not especially good or bad. The acting overall is nothing over the ordinary. My guess that it would be hard to steer to far away from the original story but they tried as much as possible. The so called Angels was a nice suprise atleast. Not a movie you would see a second time.

Review: The Other Woman

IMDB: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2203939/
Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oDcaZ3StTfI

I have to admit that romantic comedies are a guilty pleasure of mine, so I grabbed another one this evening right after suffering through Sweet Home Alabama. This time Cameron Diaz teams up with two other women against a cheating husband and along the way they form a peculiar friendship. The story is familiar and has been done many times before so there isnt anything new. Leslie Mann however does a well enough job with the comedy that its enjoyable. For some reason they had to put in a stereotypical black woman played by Nicki Minaj that is only on screen for maybe a total of two minutes. It felt kinda forced like "we have a contract to put her in a movie so lets just add her in this". Overall an enjoyable romcom for the evening.

Project Almanac formerly known as Welcome to Yesterday is a found footage sci-fi time travel movie about a couple of kids that build a time machine and starts to use it. Usually not fond of found fotage movies but this looks like fun and I love my time traveling.

IMDB: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2290553/
Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AW7_cACcXD8

Ryan Kwanten plays in this movie about some vikings that are behind enemy lines. This movies is probably being made because of History Channels show Vikings success to make some quick money. Although I find it hard that anyone can top the vikings in The 13th Warrior.

Review: Sweet Home Alabama

Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BM89EgWx_Gs

Once in my life I dubbed this romantic comedy the worst movie I had ever seen. Even worse than John Travoltas Battlefield Earth. So I had to give it another chance to see if I had either changed so much that I could like it or my perception 12 years ago was spot on. After suffering through it again I can safely say that this is the worst movie. Reese Witherspoon acting usually can bring a story to life but not in this one. Full of plotholes, poorly written script and major character flaws. The only highlight of the movie is when Lynyrd Skynyrds song Sweet Home Alabama comes up so you can close your eyes and enjoy the few minutes of relief.

News: Guillermo del Toro announcement

You will rarely see me posting news here since that is not what the blog is about. But when something so awsome as a sequel to 2013s best see-it-at-the-cinema movie  Pacific Rim gets announced, then I cant but help myself. Hopefully my ignorant friends will like this one more and just be entertained than complain about movie logic.

Review: Penny Dreadful

IMDB: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2628232/
Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YFXHfEqMcis

I also watch a lot of TV apart from movies so every now and then there might pop up a quick season review of a show I like. Penny Dreadful is a gothic horror/drama set in the Victorian era of London. It follows some interesting characters taken from different classical stories like Frankenstein and Dorian Gray and mix it all together. They succeded to bring a style that brings an erie feeling to the show in its eight episodes. Most to look forward to is Eva Green and her performance, she steals the whole stage with her acting and its a marvel to behold. If you like horror or even fantasy I can easily recommend this. From the looks of it the show will have a second season due to the success.

Future: Upcoming movies

Every now and then I will post some interesting movies that you might want to keep a lookout for. Many of them wont have a release date yet but somehow they have gotten my attention one way or the other.

An end of days drama/thriller from Australia. There has been an increase in quality movies from "down under" lately and this one will surely be worth the wait.

---------------------------------------------

A kickstarter Sci-fi movie from Switzerland. The trailer looks well made and the robots doesnt look to shabby. A gamble perhaps but crowdfunded movies shouldnt be disqualified, look how well the Veronica Mars movie did.

---------------------------------------------

A Hard Day is a korean action/crime about a detective that has the worst day of his life. Korean cinema can be tricky to get into apart from the usual mainstream thrillers that slightly more have seen. Like Oldboy and I Saw the Devil, but if you give it a chance it might suprise you. The trailer sure looked interesting.

Review: No One Lives

IMDB: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1763264/
Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VV3_2fezO_M

Director Ryuhei Kitamura makes his second english movie after Midnight Meat Train and it manages to keep that same feeling of despair. A fast paced thriller/horror movie that will satisfy more than just the enthusiasts.

Review: No Such Thing

IMDB: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0248190/
Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yHGb1MyCrDY

No Such Thing spins an interesting story about good and evil with a lighthearted feeling. The soundtrack could be better but with what I had in mind it would not come through as bright and comical. The monster in the movie is well made and the actor does a good job of making it come alive.
